RAMBLINGS

Supervisors table the bond motion for the new board to consider....all things considered, probably the best thing to do. Kept asking people who were arguing for one side or the other to explain certain details....never got a satisfactory answer.
There was a meeting last night to explore possibilities on celebrating Belmont's 100 year anniversary. Lots of work to do, but was informed that the date of Kidstown being built is in June, that is very exciting.

3 DOLLARS WORTH OF GAS

I was in a hurry the other day, stopped at Zippy Mart and got 20 dollars worth of gas. I got for my $20 about 6 and a half gallons. That made me think back to my school days when money was tight for everyone. But I drove first a 1966 Ford pickup, then a Volkswagon Beetle. $3 worth of gas would carry me for more than a week. And we kept the roads burning up back then. Gas was not yet $1 yet. I think it was around 75 cents or so. But, 20+ years does change things and the early 1980s are a lifetime away.
Do you remember the Mr. Quick (now Zippy Mart) opening up? I thought the Fried Chicken there was the best thing I had ever ate in my life. Of course, after a few weeks, and several dead chickens later, it wasn't as good. They introduced Slush Puppies to Belmont and that was the greatest thing since Sport and Barbara Harris had a bakery in Belmont and brought Icees to Belmont. That's right, we had a bakery in Belmont with fresh doughnuts and baked goods every day. Sport would fire up the store about 4am and they would stay late, as late as 9 or 10 pm every day. It was a great business, but it almost worked them to death.
I worked for Mr. Earl Campbell for a few years while I was in High School. If you remember Mr. Earl's service station, then you remember his dog, Blackie. There was 2 things in Belmont that I was told you had better not do, and one of those was to kick Mr. Earl Campbell's dog. Mr. Earl was a great human being. He appeared very gruff, but really had a kind heart. When he passed away, there is no telling how much money was owed to him that people just never got around to paying. My dad wouldn't buy tires from anyone but Mr. Earl. Also, Elmo Moxley worked there for years, and then for Blake Moore, was a wonderful person who did a very strange thing for years. He showed up to work early every day, did his job, and didn't complain. He is the kind of man that we need a ton of in this town, in this state, and in this country. A lot of people don't have respect for people like that. A lot of people are stupid.
Belmont is full of people who always did their job. They went to the factory every day, went home, made supper, got up the next day and did it again. I heard a lot of people tell how their children HAD to leave Belmont for a better life. They left better than what they got, I guarantee. I have always thought Belmont was the best place on Earth, and nothing in the last 40 years has dimmed my view. This place is not perfect, but it's perfect for me.

CAN A 0-6 TEAM DEFEAT A 7-0 TEAM?

CAN AN O-6 TEAM DEFEAT A 7-0 TEAM? THE BELMONT CARDINALS TAKE ON ONE OF THE LAST THREE UNDEFEATED 2A TEAMS IN THE STATE. THE WALNUT WILDCATS ARE A ROLL AND REMAIN AMONG THE 15 TEAMS ACROSS ALL CLASSES THAT ARE UNDEFEATED. THE BELMONT CARDINALS HAVE TRAVELED A TOTALLY DIFFERENT HIGHWAY. THESE TWO PATHS INTERSECT FRIDAY NIGHT AT WALNUT MS AND AT FIRST GLANCE, IT LOOKS LIKE A RUNAWAY FOR THE WALNUT WILDCATS.
BUT WHEN YOU STOP AND LOOK AT THE SCHEDULES OF BOTH TEAMS, YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO FIND THESE TEAMS ARE MUCH CLOSER THAN YOU THINK. YOU CAN'T TAKE ANY THING AWAY FROM THE WILDCATS BECAUSE THEY SIMPLY PLAYED THE SCHEDULE THAT WAS GIVEN TO THEM, JUST AS THE CARDINALS HAVE. BUT IF THERE WAS RATING POINTS FOR STRENGH OF SCHEDULE, THE THE CARDINALS WOULD CERTAINLY HAVE A MUCH HIGHER RATED SCHEDULE.

THE COMBINED RECORDS OF BELMONT'S OPPONENTS IS 26-15. THE COMBINED RECORDS OF WALNUT'S OPPONENTS IS 8-33. SO, THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT WALNUT IS NOT A GOOD FOOTBALL TEAM. YOU HAVE TO DO SEVERAL THINGS CONSISTENTLY AND DO THEM WELL NO MATTER HOW STRONG OR WEAK YOUR OPPONENTS ARE.
MY POINT IS SIMPLY THIS: BELMONT HAS HAD A TOUGH ROAD, AGAINST SOME TOUGH OPPONENTS, AND SOME BAD BREAKS. WE WERE A TWO POINT CONVERSION AWAY FROM A WIN AT MOOREVILLE, WE WERE 7 POINTS DOWN GOING INTO THE 4th QTR AGAINST A VERY GOOD KOSSUTH TEAM, WE LED ACKERMAN 21-14 GOING INTO THE 4th QTR, WE WERE ON THE 9 YARD LINE AT HAMILTON WITH SECONDS LEFT, AND WE GAVE BALDWYN A MILD HEART ATTACK BEFORE FINALLY SUCCOMBING IN THE 4th QTR.
SO, WE MAY BE 0-6, BUT WE AIN'T DEAD YET. THIS TEAM DESERVES YOUR SUPPORT, ENCOURGEMENT AND YOUR PRAYERS. THESE BOYS DESERVE A WIN, AND A WIN AGAINST AN UNDEFEATED TEAM WOULD DO WONDERS FOR THEIR MORALE.
SO, YES A 0-6 TEAM CAN BEAT A 7-0 TEAM. WE ARE SURELY THE UNDERDOG, BUT AFTER SPEAKING TO THE WALNUT COACH ON MONDAY, WE WON'T BE OVERLOOKED. HE KNOWS THAT THEY ARE IN FOR A FIGHT TO THE FINISH.
I AM LOOKING FOR WIN #1 THIS WEEKEND AND IT WOULD BE A MEMORABLE ONE THAT THESE GUYS WOULD CARRY THE REST OF THEIR LIVES.

FRIDAY FOOTBALL FORECAST 9-21-07

Football 9/22
FLA at UM 11:30
45-0 GATORS My good friend, Lloyd Moore (Belmont's own Lewis Grizzard), said Ole Miss won't even win the coin toss. The Gators are fierce and nasty with lightning on defense. The LSU/FLA game should be a great one.

SC at LSU 2:30
I said a couple of weeks ago that LSU was the Antichrist or worse. The Antichrist called and said that he wasn't that fierce.
LSU 38-12

UKY at ARK 5:00
KY finally plays a team that has something that resembles a defense. Arkansas has the best running backs in the country and their passing game is looking better than I had anticipated, but I am still not sure about QB Casey Dick.
Razorbacks 48-35

NMS at AUB 6:00
Tigers were shellshocked last week and ready for Hari-kiri after losing to MSU. But I think that maybe MSU and South Florida may just be pretty good football teams who beat a somewhat down Tiger team. Tigers rebound 38-10

GWB at MSU 6:00
This game is hard to predict a score as the Bulldogs will undoubtably use this game to develop QB Wesley Carroll. Coaches will deny that, but we know that a trip to South Carolina awaits next week and Carroll better be ready.
MSU 36-12

AKS at TEN 7:00
That is Ark. State at Tn. Good team for the Volunteers to take their fustrations out on. If the Volunteers don't score 40 in this one, look out.
TN 42-7

UGA at ALA 6:45
This looks like a great game. I picked Bama to win 9 games this year and so far they are looking the part. At times last week, they looked great, but at times they looked confused. Saban doesn't dwell on the shortcomings too long, but will push this team past it's shortcomings.
Bama 36-32

FEARLESS FRIDAY FORECAST

MSU at AUB
11:30 LF CH. 4 WCBI

The Dawgs travel to the plains to take on the fur of the tigers. These tigers are not full grown and have yet to show that their claws have developed much of a scratch. However, the bull puppies are barking a lot on defense, but the offense has been just yelping against quality competition.

Auburn in one much closer than they want 24-21
(MSU 19-14  WELL, I WAS GLAD TO MISS THIS ONE....THE DEFENSE DESERVES A HERO'S REWARD FOR NOT QUITTING)

WCU at UGA
1:00

The other bulldogs take a week off to play the money game. It will be a great time for the Bulldogs, bodybags for their opponents.
UGA-ly 55-10
(Georgia 45, Western Carolina 16)

TEN at FLA
3:30
Come on Tenn., you lost to the university of callyforny.....Gators 35-17
(WORSE THAN I THOUGHT Florida 59, Tennessee 20)

LOU at UKY
7:30
Louisville gave up 42 to middle tn. state........defense forget to play? UPSET SPECIAL...KY pick the score  (WOW, WHAT A GAME....Kentucky 40, Louisville 34,,, BUT WHAT CAN KY DO AGAINST A REAL DEFENSE)

MTSU at LSU
7:00
LSU not even worth mentioning the score
(LSU 44, Middle Tennessee 0)

ARK at ALA
5:45
Al on their way to 9 wins.....Tide 24-10
(ARK PLAYED BETTER THAN I ANTICIPATED, BUT A L IS A L Alabama 41, Arkansas 38)

UM at VAN
6:00
had vandy picked for this one all year, then they stunk it up last week......Rebs 24-10

(Vanderbilt 31, Ole Miss 17  GOOD GREIF....OLE MISS ENTERS A RUN OF GAMES THAT WILL BE VERY DIFFICULT)

SCSU at USC
South Carolina rolls in a easy one......
(South Carolina 38, South Carolina State 3)

Notre Dame at Michigan.....two powerhouses at 0-2 try to avoid 0-3......who cares........

FEARLESS FRIDAY FORECAST

I am way behind working on the Bear Creek Festival so I'll make it very quick...

ALA vs VAN
11:30
Tough, tough game for Bama. If Shula was still the coach, I'd pick Vandy.
Bama 24-17

MSU vs TUL
6:00
After a sorry pathetic offensive performance against LSU, State rebounds to continue to pretend to be a SEC football team.
State 34-10

USF vs AUB
8:00
Not the blowout that you might expect, but The Tigers 32-14

TROY vs FLA
7:00
The blowout you would expect, but I am still a little unsure about the Gators.
47-13

USC vs UGA
5:45
Second Best game of the day........Bulldogs 26-23

KENT vs UK
6:00
Kentucky keeps pretending THEY are a real football team. So why do the fans keep hollering, "Get more rebounds!!". Wildcats 48-12

VT vs LSU
8:15
LSU is the antichrist......or something just as bad....... voters take notice- LSU 44-7

MO vs UM
5:00
Does Ole Miss remember this whipping last year? Ole Miss is better than Illinios and the Illini almost beat the big MO last week.
Mo...32-28

USM vs TEN
7:00
Is Cal that good, or is Tn Defense sorry?
Close call, but TN 25-21

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL LINEUP

This week is the Car Show. It has been renamed the Pat Reed Memorial Car Show which is a fitting tribute to Pat. I remember several conversations with Pat and he loved the car show more than people realized. Often, Pat felt lonely carrying the load, but he never lost faith in Belmont. Somebody once said, "There is no limit to what can be accomplished if you don't care who gets the credit." And I never saw Pat breaking his arm patting himself on the back.
I hope with such good folks as Anson and Rayanne, the Kidstown volunteers, and the Car Club that Anson belongs to, the tradition of selfless giving and work will continue. Some of my fondest memories of my late Dad was going to the Car show and letting him tell me stories of a car that did this, or a car that would do that. He looked foward to the show every year, and other than church, enjoyed it as much as any thing in his life.

The Pine Ridge Boys: 12:00 pm The Pine Ridge Boys will take the stage for a reunion concert. If you are younger than 50, then you are too young to remember the days when the Pine Ridge Boys was a huge draw around these parts. They had their own weekly TV show on channel 9. Brian Sparks, Nolan Wells, Leon Shotts, and Dolan Taylor still remain from the original group. My dad, Bufard Wells was in the group and was always very fond of the memories he had with the boys. From all reports, these guys are having a ball.

The Sparks Family: 2:00 pm I think that the Sparks Family are as good now as they have ever been. With Scott Nunley in the group, they have experienced a resurgence and seem to have more energy than ever. I think Scott has been a real blessing to the Sparks Family and seems to be having a real blast himself.

Brent Colley: 6:00 pm This is one you don't want to miss. Brent is a Belmont native who has really came a long ways. Brent graduated from Belmont in 1991 (I think) and attended college at Northeast and finished at Blue Mountain College with a degree in music something or other. He grew up in the Fairview Holy Church of Christ as I did. He was influenced by the music of that church as most folks who went there was. But Brent took it so much farther. He currently serves as the music minister at Lakeview Baptist Church in Selmer Tn. But I have told him several times that he should be singing professionally, but he won't even consider giving up his church ministry. Belmont has produced some great talents, Mac MacAnnally, Judy Humphries, Katie Cashion Crane, Chris Stokes, and others to name a few. And I believe that if you listen to Brent, you will agree that Brent is someone Belmont should be very proud of.

David Deaton: 4:00 pm David has a easy style of music that is enjoyable to listen to. David can't be explained, just enjoyed. Don't miss out on David.

First Baptist Puppet Team: 11:00 am Make sure the kids are around for this performance. The puppet team is fun for all ages.

Mt Zion drama team: 10:30 am This group always gives a powerful performance, and presents a powerful message as well.

Lt. Governor Candidate Phil Bryant: 11:30 am Belmont will recieve some attention as Mr Bryant comes to Belmont to speak. A statewide candidate coming to Belmont is always a honor.

Rex Huffman and friends: 1:00 No one enjoys himself more than Rex while singing. It is always a pleasure to hear Rex and always a joy to watch him perform.

also performing will be Laken Poole, Anna Butler, Pat Johnson (rising Country Star), Heavons Anthem, and more.

THIS JUST IN...............KATIE CASHION CRANE WILL BE ONSTAGE AT 5:30 PM

COACH MOODY AND THE FOOTBALL TEAM

My thoughts for the week.

Belmont Football: The first game was one that hurt awful bad for the boys. They deserved a win, but it just did not work out. And they know that the next three games are going to be tough. Tish County, a 42-0 winner over Alcorn Central, is next at Belmont, then Kossuth and a road game at Ackerman. Everyone looks for someone to blame when things don't go right. The coaches should have done this, this player didn't do that, and so on. But unless you are on that field, attend every practice, attend every game, then you only see part of the picture and I always try to keep that in mind. I am not a coach, I am a fan. I have a fan's perspective and a fan's view. If you hear me say something on the radio, or in a cafe, or somewhere else, just remember I am a fan. I have never fancied myself a "sideline coach".
The offense I think we should run is one where we win. The play we should have run is the one that would have scored. That is a fan's perspective.

I was really impressed with one thing at Mooreville. The BBQ and Onion Rings was great, and the lemonade was fantastic. I got mine from the Mooreville side consession stand, so I don't know how the other side for Belmont was. As we were leaving, they gave us free BBQ and Beans along with more lemonade.
That made the ride home a little more bearable.

Coach Moody: I don't think that there is man in Belmont with a heavier load on his shoulders than Coach Moody. Coach wants to win, just as bad as any other person on the Belmont side. And 2 yards friday night changes the tone of this conversation by a lot. But sometimes, those 2 yards just don't go in your favor. Coach Moody told me a long time ago that he wants these boys to win, but he wants to leave them with a lot more than just a football experience. He wants them to have a successful life, to be able to overcome life's obstacles, to face and conquer the trials of life. And whether they believe it or not, they will face much more trying things in life than football games. Two friends of mine each had a son diagnosed with cancer and had to endure years of struggle and uncertainty. That is a trial.
So, if you see a Belmont coach, or a Belmont player, give them a thumbs up, a word of encourgement, or just a smile. And you just never know, they just might surprise you in the coming weeks.

FEARLESS FRIDAY FORECAST FOR THURSDAY

MSU HOSTS LSU

CROOM HAS THE BEST TEAM THAT HE HAS HAD IN 4 YEARS. DEPTH IS NOT NEAR THE PROBLEM THAT IT HAS BEEN. I AM CALLING FOR THE DOGS TO WIN 6 OR 7 GAMES THIS YEAR.........STOP LAUGHING AND KEEP READING. THE DOGS HAD 22 TURNOVERS THE FIRST HALF OF THE SEASON LAST YEAR, 7 THE REST OF THE YEAR. YARDAGE TOTALS IMPROVED ALL OF THE YEAR WITH MSU OUTGAINING ARKANSAS AND OLE MISS IN THOSE LOSSES, AND KENTUCKY EARLIER. THE TEAM AS A WHOLE IS BETTER. SO WHO DO THEY BEAT BESIDES UAB, TULANE, AND GARDNER WEBB...... KENTUCKY, OLE MISS, ARKANSAS (MORE ABOUT THE RAZORBACKS TOMORROW), AND MAYBE ALABAMA (WHO WILL NOT LOSE MANY GAMES).
